Did you know that inbound links, which point to your website, are one of the most powerful ways of climbing search engine result pages! That’s right – every link to your site is seen by the search engines as a endorsement and builds upon the credibility and reputation of your website. The more people who promote your content (link to your site), the higher you get ranked.

Web crawlers, web robots, or spiders are used by many companies (like Google, Yahoo etc.) to collect, catalog, index, and return information about your website. The key to a higher ranking is to create targeted content that appeals to human visitors who will link to you, while the search engines index your site for the ultimate SEO strategy!

Getting those inbound links to your site from other websites is not that hard. Local Chambers of Commerce, trade associations, schools or other professional organizations will often link to your website as a benefit of membership. Another great way to gain inbound links is to sponsor events at local charities that the press will publish online with links to your site.

Writing articles about your business or profession and submitting them to as many article directories as possible is another way to acquire links and increase your rankings. Make sure to write about your area of expertise! Check out sites like EzineArticles.com and submit up to ten articles for free!

Sharing useful information through a blog is one of the easiest ways to help draw links. If readers find your site useful and informative, they are likely to share your information. Bloggers are always looking for inspiration, websites to link to and things to discuss. You should also list your blog with online directories and on social media sites so people can find you.

Comment on other blogs, not just because you think it will help your SEO, but to show your authority within your niche market. If your comments add value to the discussion, they can drive direct traffic to your website which could lead to natural links for you. Make sure your URL is included in your signature, but please, don’t be a comment spammer or you’ll get banned quicker than you can say “link” if you do this!

We don’t recommend purchasing text links for SEO purposes. Google actually frowns upon paying for links and will penalize those they catch! It goes against their webmaster guidelines and could harm or have a negative effect on your SEO efforts. Choose carefully and play by the rules, because you don’t want links from just any website.

Sharing industry related information on social media sites will also draw links by bringing readers to blogs and websites naturally. Sites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn can help build your online brand and increase your site traffic very economically and organically. If you Google a company such as ours “Charene Creative”, you will find that more than half of the links are influenced by social media sites like LinkedIn, Twitter and our blog. Google us and see for yourself!

There are no shortcuts to finding good quality incoming links to your website. Don’t get caught up in link schemes or web spammers. Take your time and focus your attention on building naturally acquired organic links because they show that actual people are interest in what you have to say!

The Google News team made an interesting post titled “Psst… secrets of Google News exposed!” at official Google blog. The post explained about various Myths and facts related with Google news. Posted by Andy Golding, Software Engineer at Google, Andy also shared about how Google include and publish (rank) articles in Google news.

Coming directly to Myths and facts explained.

1. Updating article once it’s included in Google news helps in higher rankings.

False, According to Google the current Google news crawler doesn’t revisit the articles. Every article/news in crawled only once so changing or updating the article will not help at all in fact any changes you make will not be shown at Google news website. I hope Google news crawler will soon have the functionality of revisiting the WebPages.

2. Placing image next to article improves the rankings.

False, Google do include images in news results and displays them next to your news item, but it cannot read the images and rankings purely depends upon text accompanied in your news item and not on having images in the news.

3. Articles with images and video are not included.

True, Google crawler cannot read flash, videos, images and other such type of multimedia content. Thus it’s a fact that if you new release or article doesn’t contain any text accompanying images or multimedia content then it will not be included at all in news results.

4. Time is a major factor for inclusion.

False, Google crawlers are frequently looking for content related to current event and top stories. There are lots of factors that Google algorithms take into consideration and choose the best articles from the cluster for ranking. Publishing articles prior, after or in midst of any event don’t improve any chances of rankings at all.

5. Articles with Google adsense ads rank high in Google news.

False, well this is the most disputed topic among webmasters not only for Google news ranking but also for Google organic results also. Google had always denied this fact and according to goolge spokesman, “Using AdSense doesn’t have any impact upon our ability to crawl or rank your articles. We try to stay as objective as possible, and giving sites with our ads product a boost, well, that wouldn’t be very objective!”

6. Creating sitemap helps.

True, sitemaps may not help in achieving top rankings but they do definitely help in other way like meta data for our article, specifying category the news would be appear, specifying which articles should appear in google news etc.

7. Redesign or change in site structure may affect my coverage in news rankings.

True, any drastic change in website design or structure, layout etc may cause problems with crawling of your article and hence overall coverage over google new may be affected.

Google recently released a statement announcing that they have taken steps to prevent Googlebombing, this is the action where sites are found for some specific terms not totally related to their content for example ‘miserable failure’ would return the Whitehouse site, ‘liar’ would return the 10 Downing Street site etc.

This has been a problem with the results for a while in that they could be manipulated by using links and in some cases very few links. When asked why they hadn’t responed before the Official Google Webmaster Central Blog, responded by saying :-

“People have asked about how we feel about Googlebombs, and we have talked about them in the past. Because these pranks are normally for phrases that are well off the beaten path, they haven’t been a very high priority for us. But over time, we’ve seen more people assume that they are Google’s opinion, or that Google has hand-coded the results for these Googlebombed queries. That’s not true, and it seemed like it was worth trying to correct that misperception. So a few of us who work here got together and came up with an algorithm that minimizes the impact of many Googlebombs.”

“The next natural question to ask is Why doesn’t Google just edit these search results by hand? To answer that, you need to know a little bit about how Google works. When we’re faced with a bad search result or a relevance problem, our first instinct is to look for an automatic way to solve the problem instead of trying to fix a particular search by hand. Algorithms are great because they scale well: computers can process lots of data very fast, and robust algorithms often work well in many different languages. That’s what we did in this case, and the extra effort to find a good algorithm helps detect Googlebombs in many different languages. We wouldn’t claim that this change handles every prank that someone has attempted.”

So the question from an internet marketing and SEO point of view is how this change will filter through the results. Will this have any effect on someone in their real estate internet marketing?

At this stage it is hard to say, but from what Google say there are 100 or so Googlebombs that they are aware of. If they are manually flagging them which they say they’re not, how are they picking up these spurious links that are unrelated to the site they link to and likely unrelated to the site they link from. At this point my personal feeling is unrelated may be very related to how Google is filtering so watch how your results may be changing depending on how relevant your links are.

Why Flash Websites Are Not SEO-Friendly (Yet)

June 2008. That’s not too long ago on your wall calendar, perhaps, but is a geological age or two in “tech time.” Computers and communications technologies like the Web have changed quite a bit since then, but some things apparently take longer than others, as it was in June 2008 that the Google Webmaster’s blog announced that Googlebot was able to extract links and text content from Flash files. This would make it possible for the company to rank and index all the sites using that popular type of content. Adobe chimed in at the time to say what a win-win situation it was. It sure sounded like the previous problems were solved.

Of course, Google backed off a bit by adding that they would have to phase in the changes, that it would take a little time. The firm promised that the first noticeable improvement would be better snippets, the search result blurbs, coming from Flash-filled sites. Since, in the past, Google could get nothing at all from that content, the snippets would be missing or exhibit the only discoverable text (even if it were tags or version numbers). The fact is, there is now some limited functionality to the Googlebot Flash-reading program, but many observers believe the firm overpromised and underdelivered.

Two years on

Adobe has every incentive to convince people that Flash belongs on their Web sites and is fully indexable by all leading search engines. The explosion of Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) means that a lack of indexing functionality renders a growing percentage of sites invisible to the search spiders. Two years on, there is still little data being release by either Google or Adobe on the number of Flash pages being indexed, the depth of the indexing, the effect on search results or any other metric. There appears to be quite a disconnect between the PR and the facts.

About a year after the initial announcement, in summer of 2009, Adobe started sending out assurances to RIA developers (again) that they could keep working the way they were working, and didn’t need to alter or repurpose content to make it searchable. The problem, of course, is that this solves nothing, as many Flash pages have little text, anyway, and are composed of images, video and animation, the details of which will not be displayed in the proposed approach.

The search process would work better if a unique URL were associated with each piece of content. When Flash dynamically loads text during the user interaction, and the URL stays the same, Googlebot could track and remember those actions, at least to a reasonable degree, and remain tied to the original URL. Adobe distributed a Flash player to all the search engines to allow spiders the ability to navigate through an SWF application like a virtual user. When specially tweaked for searching, Flash technology can capture all the paths in the SWF application, much like it ambles through pages in standard Web applications and formats.

Workaround time?

In the meantime, progress has stalled. There are workarounds, though. You can use meta tags on whatever HTML page has the SWF file, but the problem with that is that search engines rank on multiple pages, content, linking, user paths and more. Your page will rank low because, as far as the search bots are concerned, your site is just a single page that links with no one and nothing.

The other workaround is an HTML mirror site, where you take your Flash pages and build separate HTML versions of each, stripped down without a lot of fanfare and hoopla included. You will then use meta tags to embed specific search terms that relate to that page. This allows the spider to crawl the entire content of the site, bringing up your ranking and visibility, and you can then insert HTML code to automatically redirect people who open the HTML ringer page to the Flash version. It also allows you to offer, instead of a bells-and-whistles Flash site, a simpler, faster-loading HTML version for people who have dial-up or low-bandwidth connections.

The impact on SEO

No one wants to have to do a pile of extra work like that if it’s not necessary. The problem is, we don’t really know when the full-on solution will be in place. Flash is still a sore spot for SEO pros, and some would prefer that text always remain HTML (which is text), and that Flash be restricted to non-textual content such as animations, videos, illustrations and the like. Others are hoping that the Holy Grail of Flash searchability will be announced, with evidence that it works, any day now. That day is not here, and it’s hard to predict when it will be. In the meantime, there are workarounds, and there is also patience. Perhaps a combination of these is the best route for the moment.

There is a lot of confusion as to how a website gets to be #1 in Google. Although Google often changes their algorithm, one thing remains consistent; the inclusion of backlinks. You may ask, what is a backlink? That is a fair question; simply a backlink is a hyperlink from somewhere that points to your website. The more appropriate question should be; is there anything I need to know about backlinks? This answer is much more complex.

There are several things to take into consideration when building a backlink. This first thing is the anchor text. The anchor text is a piece of HTML code that is normally blue and underlined. These anchor text help Google to determine the keywords that should be used for your site. Depending on the type of website you are commenting on; you will need to use either “a href” or a “URL=”. Both methods are well documented on the Internet. The second thing to consider when building a backlink is if the backlink will appear on a homepage or an internal page. Homepage backlinks are more valuable than internal pages. The third consideration is the authority of the website you are commenting on. This is called Page Rank (PR). The best way to view PR is to use Firefox in coordination with SEO Quake. Google uses a ranking of between n/a (the lowest) to 0 through 10 (the highest). Getting a backlink on a PR 9 site is more valuable than getting a backlink on a PR n/a site. It is also harder to get a backlink on a PR 9 site than a n/a site.

Earn the top spot in Google with these proven methods:

1. Comment on Blogs - Find a blog that is about something you are passionate about and become a member. And, while a member; do more than just read the articles. Comment on them, become an active member by thinking about the article and submitting appropriate comments. If there are questions that are unanswered that you can solve, comment. And, always leave at a minimum your URL.
2. Submit Articles - Write articles on subjects that you are familiar with. Search the Internet for article directories and have your work distributed. (ezine is a great site to use) Most article directories allow you to include hyperlinks. These hyperlinks should of course include backlinks you your site.
3. Incorporate Social Media - Social Media sites like Facebook and Twitter are scanned often by Google. So, consider including hyperlinks in your posts on occasion. One word of advice; don’t just throw out spam. Your friends will not appreciate it.
4. Buy Backlinks - There are a tremendous amount of individuals out there that are willing to sell their service. Many are of great value. But, there are also many scammers. Be aware and do your research. I can tell you from experience that buying backlinks is a successful strategy for most people involved in Internet Marketing.
5. Trade Backlinks - While trading backlinks has fallen out of favor by most. I believe it still to be a tool to use as long as there isn’t a direct page for page linkage. The best way to implement this is to find a webmaster with more than one domain.
6. Build a domain farm - I like this technique. The key is to find domains that are of value. A couple of things determine value: Age and Backlinks. Expect to pay some good money if you find a site that has both. Backlinks forum, Warrior Forum and other sites will help you find domains for sale.
7. Join a Specialty Group - I am a developer. So, I belong to about a dozen coding websites. And, I am considered an expert on more than one. So, the webmaster really trusts my input. One of my requirements for helping junior developers is the inclusion of backlinks to my sites.
8. Build a Profile - Find some forums in which to become a member. Most forum sites allow you to build a signature. And, most signature fields allow backlink code.
9. Use a tool - There are many different backlink tools available to the intrepid Internet marketer. My favorite is the Backlinks Engine see below to find out why. You can’t beat the traffic it delivers for a one time price.

Create unique, accurate page title make use of the “description” meta tag Improving Site Structure improve the structure of your URLs make your site easier to navigate optimizing Content offer quality content and services write better anchor text optimize your use of images use heading tags appropriately dealing with Crawlers make effective use of robots.txt be aware of rel=”nofollow” for links SEO for Mobile Phones notify Google of mobile sites guide mobile users accurately promotions and Analysis promote your website in the right ways.

An example may help our explanations, so we’ve created a fictitious website to follow throughout the guide. For each topic, we’ve fleshed out enough information about the site to illustrate the point being covered. Here’s some background information about the site we’ll use: accurately describe the page’s content Choose a title that effectively communicates the topic of the page’s content. Create unique title tags for each page each of your pages should ideally have a unique title tag, which helps Google know how the page is distinct from the others on your site. Use brief, but descriptive titles Titles can be both short and informative. If the title is too long, Google will show only a portion of it in the search result. Make use of the “description” meta tag Summaries can be defined for each page.

A page’s description meta tag gives Google and other search engines a summary of what the page is about whereas a page’s title may be a few words or a phrase, a page’s description meta tag might be a sentence or two or a short paragraph. Google Webmaster Tools provides a handy content analysis section that’ll tell you about any description meta tags that are either too short, long, or duplicated too many times (the same information is also shown for tags). Like the tag, the description meta tag is placed within the tag of your HTML document. What are the merits of description meta tag.

Description meta tags are important because Google might use them as snippets for your pages. Note that we say “might” because Google may choose to use a relevant section of your page’s visible text if it does a good job of matching up with a user’s query. Alternatively, Google might use your site’s description in the Open Directory Project if your site is listed there (learn how to prevent search engines from displaying ODP data). Adding description meta tags to each of your pages is always a good practice in case Google cannot find a good selection of text to use in the snippet. The Webmaster Central Blog has an informative post on improving snippets with better description meta tags. Words in the snippet are bolded when they appear in the user’s query (). This gives the user clues about whether the content on the page matches with what he or she is looking for. () is another example, this time showing a snippet from a description meta tag on a deeper page (which ideally has its own unique description meta tag) containing an article. Accurately summarize the page’s content Write a description that would both inform and interest users if they saw your description meta tag as a snippet in a search result. Use unique descriptions for each page

Having a different description meta tag for each page helps both users and Google, especially in searches where users may bring up multiple pages on your domain (e.g. searches using the site: operator). If your site has thousands or even millions of pages, hand-crafting description meta tags probably isn’t feasible. In this case, you could automatically generate description meta tags based on each page’s content.

At the end of last month, Google rolled out a new page offering advice to those seeking a search engine optimization firm. Since being unveiled, there’s been both support and criticism of the tips and recommendations that Google has posted in various SEO forums.

From my perspective, most of what Google has posted is sensible advice and positive for the SEO community as a whole, especially compared to what was said by Google previously about SEOs, within its help area:

“Be very careful about allowing an individual consultant or company to ‘optimize’ your web site. Chances are they will engage in some of our ‘Don’ts’ and end up hurting your site.”

A brief and fairly negative statement, to say the least. The impression one comes away with is that most SEOs are likely to cause you problems, so you’re better off avoiding them. Compare that to what Google’s now saying:

“Many SEOs provide useful services for website owners, from writing copy to giving advice on site architecture and helping to find relevant directories to which a site can be submitted. However, there are a few unethical SEOs who have given the industry a black eye through their overly aggressive marketing efforts and their attempts to unfairly manipulate search engine results.”

So, congratulations, SEOs! Google, in my opinion, is legitimizing the majority of you and certainly the industry.

For its part, Google actually denies that there has been any significant change in its view toward SEOs. The company notes — accurately, I would add — that it has worked with the SEO community for some time, speaking at conferences, posting information within its own web site and via public forums. If the tone on its help pages now seems more positive toward SEOs, Google says it is just now wording things better.

“Maybe we are expressing it more clearly. Certainly there’s always room for a consultant that gives you good advice,” said Matt Cutts, a software engineer at Google who deals with webmaster issues. “The intent is not to be negative or positive about SEOs but provide more information.”

Whatever the reason behind the change, I think it clearly gives the general public a more positive impression about SEOs from Google. However, Google says the main intent behind the page is educational. Google wants the public to understand how to choose an SEO wisely, so they are not likely to encounter problems getting listed with Google or other search engines.

“The overall goal is to give people the tools so that they can assess a decision about search engine optimization,” said Cutts.

Let’s take a closer look at some of those tips.

Some SEOs may try to sell you the ability to type keywords directly into the browser address bar

This tip really stood out in my mind, because there are definitely people out there selling namespace services via dubious practices. However, these pitches have nothing to do with Google. Instead, they involve Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

So why’s Google calling this out? The company says it’s just trying to educate people generally about SEO-related issues, regardless of whether they are Google-specific.

“It goes back to Google just trying to do the right thing, the same way we did with the pop-up page,” Cutts said, referring to an educational page the company posted earlier this year on pop-up ads.

To learn more about problems with namespace pitches, see my recent article, RealNames Clones Causing Confusion. I also expect to revisit the issue in the near future, because I continue to get emails from people confused by misleading pitches. If anything, it would be nice to see Microsoft itself, rather than Google, make a loud, public statement on the issue.

Nice advice, but then Google doesn’t offer any real help on how to do this. That’s OK, I’ll fill in some blanks.

Finding Search Engine Optimization Professionals is a fairly recent SearchDay article that talks about three SEO directories. Both SeoPros.org and the SEO Consultants Directory are directories that screen who is allowed in, while SEMList.com allows anyone to list themselves and information about their companies.

MarketingSherpa.com publishes a Buyers’ Guide to Search Engine Optimization Firms. My last review was of the first edition, but I’ve skimmed the second edition and still think it is well worth the money for anyone thinking about hiring an SEO firm. Along with reviews, the guide offers a lot of helpful advice.

you should ask how long a company has been in business and how many full time staffers it employs

How long a company has been in business is good, but number of staffers isn’t necessarily relevant. You could find a small firm of only one or two people that is great. They may not have more people because they don’t want to grow beyond that.

On the forums, I saw several posts questioning the wisdom of this tip, as well. For its part, Google explains that it didn’t mean to suggest that companies with big full-time staffs are better than others. Instead, Google says it is really suggesting that consumers learn more details about the company, period.

“We are not making this general statement that the number of people matters,” Cutts said. “This is more an example of doing your homework.”

Hopefully, Google will look again at the wording. A simple change to something like, “You should ask how long a company has been in business, who is employed there, how did those employees gain their experience?,” might get across Google’s point that you should learn more about a company before engaging them without the focus seeming to be on number of employees.

Ask your SEO firm if it reports every spam abuse that it findsto Google using our spam complaint form. Ethical SEO firmsreport deceptive sites that violate Google’s spam guidelines

Sorry, I completely disagree, and I’m far from alone, judging from forum posts and other comments I’ve read. You can indeed be an ethical SEO without also playing the role of Google’s volunteer spam police.

In fact, there are plenty of “ethical” SEO firms that feel that reporting spam actually can be an unethical practice. These firms feel like they should focus on doing positive work — promoting their clients, rather than getting involved in negative work of expending time reporting spam.

Having your blog searchable on the web won’t happen automatically, nor will it happen immediately. A lot of hard work, and patience, is required.

Besides friends and family, your initial readers will come through the “Next Blog” link, randomly. You get more “Next Blog” traffic from posting more, less from posting less. And, you’ll need this initial traffic.

Most long term readers will initially find your blog through search engine hits, from meaningful searches. Not from searching for your blog by name.

http://blogging.nitecruzr.net/2008/06/relevance-yields-readership-and-search.html

You have to get the search engines involved, but you won’t get listed by them, automatically. You have to do some work, let them know that you’re there, that you want to be listed, and that you are worthy of being listed.

1) Get your friends to link to your blog, where your blog is relevant.

2) Participate in forums, where your blog is relevant, and include the URL.

3) Comment on other blogs, in relevant comments, and include the URL.

4) Put relevant and useful content in your blog.

5) Some search engines may index your blog using the site feed. Be sure to activate the feed.

6) When you have done all of the above, your blog will have some weight. Submit your blog to the search engines, for indexing.

7) Post frequently, and keep the content of your blog moving.

http://groups.google.com/group/blogger-help/web/how-to-get-traffic-and-repeated-readers-for-your-blog

None of this happens overnight. Search engines can take months to index your blog fully. And even when indexed, don’t expect for a search to some key element in your blog to give you an entry on the first page of the search hits. And remember that owners of other blogs, like yours, are actively working to be included by Google too. Try to ignore the trolls who babble about SEO.

Use Google Webmaster Tools, and Yahoo Site Explorer, to watch the indexing progress, keep an eye for problems, and know when the blog is indexed. And to setup a sitemap, which is useful to the search engines.

Google Analytics, that’s suggested by some helpers here, is more useful to small businesses and corporations.

And understand the differences between followers, readers, and subscribers.
