Tricking Google is a No No

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

While some have tried to figure out or manipulate Google’s search algorithm, others have referenced Google itself and have used the many tools available to optimize and enhance their sites. Free tools such as Google Analytics or Webmaster Tools are invaluable and should not be looked down on because they are F-R-to the double E.

People think they have SEO figured out because they took a one hour webinar or read an article about how to become an SEO guru. I’m sorry friends, but you just don’t have it. There is more to it than listening to a guru. Do your research, practice, live and breathe SEO. But always refer back to the search engine itself. Google tells us what it is looking for and what it frowns upon. Don’t waste your time trying to pull one over on Google because it is just too smart for that. Tricking Google is a no no and it’s time you’ve learned a lesson.

Here are some of the quality guidelines and things that you should not do that Google has specifically outlined for you to improve your sites’ ranking on its search engine. For more detailed information from Google’s Webmaster Guidelines please go here http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769#3.

Here is a condensed version:

The first basic principle that has been said over and over is to make your site for your users and not the search engines. “Cloaking” or presenting information to your users that is different from what the search engines see is frowned upon. If your users can interpret and easily navigate your pages, so will the search engines. Keep in mind that you will need to fully optimize title tags and meta descriptions as well as other basic search engine optimization “onpage” elements for the search engines to see.

The second basic principle is to not trick Google. Trust me, it is a matter of time before you will get caught and you will pay for your trickery. Some tricks that people actually think help them are: creating domains with duplicate content, using hidden or invisible text, using hidden links, and/or throwing up a bunch of keywords that have no relevancy to your site. These tricks won’t cut it.

This should go without saying, but too many people just don’t want to listen…do not participate in link schemes! Link exchange programs or link farming is not respected by Google and it is not what it wants to see. Links should be built naturally and you shouldn’t have to build or obtain links by doing something sneaky. If you are participating in a link scheme you will likely be linking to bad neighborhoods that will hurt your position on the SERPs. If you have good content on your site and/or blog posts, people will link to you. The links will come!

Finally, do not fall for the myth that SEO is a one-time thing. Making “onpage” changes or modifications should only happen once. However, the ongoing blogging and social media optimization is what is of most importance in the long run.

Why Flash Websites Are Not Seo-Friendly (Yet)

Why Flash Websites Are Not SEO-Friendly (Yet)

June 2008. That’s not too long ago on your wall calendar, perhaps, but is a geological age or two in “tech time.” Computers and communications technologies like the Web have changed quite a bit since then, but some things apparently take longer than others, as it was in June 2008 that the Google Webmaster’s blog announced that Googlebot was able to extract links and text content from Flash files. This would make it possible for the company to rank and index all the sites using that popular type of content. Adobe chimed in at the time to say what a win-win situation it was. It sure sounded like the previous problems were solved.

Of course, Google backed off a bit by adding that they would have to phase in the changes, that it would take a little time. The firm promised that the first noticeable improvement would be better snippets, the search result blurbs, coming from Flash-filled sites. Since, in the past, Google could get nothing at all from that content, the snippets would be missing or exhibit the only discoverable text (even if it were tags or version numbers). The fact is, there is now some limited functionality to the Googlebot Flash-reading program, but many observers believe the firm overpromised and underdelivered.

Two years on

Adobe has every incentive to convince people that Flash belongs on their Web sites and is fully indexable by all leading search engines. The explosion of Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) means that a lack of indexing functionality renders a growing percentage of sites invisible to the search spiders. Two years on, there is still little data being release by either Google or Adobe on the number of Flash pages being indexed, the depth of the indexing, the effect on search results or any other metric. There appears to be quite a disconnect between the PR and the facts.

About a year after the initial announcement, in summer of 2009, Adobe started sending out assurances to RIA developers (again) that they could keep working the way they were working, and didn’t need to alter or repurpose content to make it searchable. The problem, of course, is that this solves nothing, as many Flash pages have little text, anyway, and are composed of images, video and animation, the details of which will not be displayed in the proposed approach.

The search process would work better if a unique URL were associated with each piece of content. When Flash dynamically loads text during the user interaction, and the URL stays the same, Googlebot could track and remember those actions, at least to a reasonable degree, and remain tied to the original URL. Adobe distributed a Flash player to all the search engines to allow spiders the ability to navigate through an SWF application like a virtual user. When specially tweaked for searching, Flash technology can capture all the paths in the SWF application, much like it ambles through pages in standard Web applications and formats.

Workaround time?

In the meantime, progress has stalled. There are workarounds, though. You can use meta tags on whatever HTML page has the SWF file, but the problem with that is that search engines rank on multiple pages, content, linking, user paths and more. Your page will rank low because, as far as the search bots are concerned, your site is just a single page that links with no one and nothing.

The other workaround is an HTML mirror site, where you take your Flash pages and build separate HTML versions of each, stripped down without a lot of fanfare and hoopla included. You will then use meta tags to embed specific search terms that relate to that page. This allows the spider to crawl the entire content of the site, bringing up your ranking and visibility, and you can then insert HTML code to automatically redirect people who open the HTML ringer page to the Flash version. It also allows you to offer, instead of a bells-and-whistles Flash site, a simpler, faster-loading HTML version for people who have dial-up or low-bandwidth connections.

The impact on SEO

No one wants to have to do a pile of extra work like that if it’s not necessary. The problem is, we don’t really know when the full-on solution will be in place. Flash is still a sore spot for SEO pros, and some would prefer that text always remain HTML (which is text), and that Flash be restricted to non-textual content such as animations, videos, illustrations and the like. Others are hoping that the Holy Grail of Flash searchability will be announced, with evidence that it works, any day now. That day is not here, and it’s hard to predict when it will be. In the meantime, there are workarounds, and there is also patience. Perhaps a combination of these is the best route for the moment.

How To Get Your Blog Comments Approved

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

Blog commenting has long since been a highly used method for building backlinks to your website. Actually, it has been used and abused in the past so much that most blogs and search engines have completely discounted the value of comment links in terms of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) value. Many blogs do not link out. Most have the nofollow attribute applied to comments and a great number of bloggers have turned off commenting all together.

Still, however, commenting on blogs can have great value if a blog visitor uses it for what it was intended for, as a means to encourage dialogue and idea exchange. Here are some steps that will help you to get your comments approved if you are a blogger or webmaster looking to comment so as to drive traffic and grow your indexed backlink count.
Find The Right Blogs. What good is commenting on a blog that doesn’t teach you about your niche or is not related to you niche in a direct or supplemental way. The purpose of commenting on blogs is to interact with both the blogger and their visitors. If you have a website about a certain subject, find blog about that same subject or related subjects. By doing so, odds are you will find targeted, search-engine-driven traffic consisting of like-minded surfers looking to learn and interact. This is a great way to draw visitors to your own site and build your reputation.

Alexa Rank. Finding blogs with high levels of traffic is very important. One metric that you can look at when looking for blogs with high levels of traffic is it’s Alexa rank. Simply go to http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo and enter the URL of the site in question. Do this for all of the sites you are researching and comment on the ones with the lowest Alexa rank. In this case a low Alexa rank is a good thing because it means more traffic.

Use Your Real Name. The days of spamming blogs with keywords are over. There is really no need to use keywords in your comment or as your name when commenting. Visitors who read your comments should know your niche simply by the genre of blog that you are commenting on. This is not a complicated point. Just use your real name.

Add Value To The Article. If you want to get your comments approved, you have to add value in one form or another to the article. This means, of course, reading the article and learning something from it, provided there is something to be learned. Think of an insightful comment that actually adds to the discussion. Or, if you have a question about something in the article, ask it as your comment. This is a great way to get comments approved and solicit interaction.
Use Proper Grammar, Spelling And Punctuation. Nothing be-speaks a lack of professionalism more that poor grammar, spelling or punctuation. When you comment on blogs, you are not texting a friend on their iPhone, you are acting as an ambassador or representative for your company or website. These types of things stand out and can make the difference between getting the click and just getting skipped.

NoFollow Or DoFollow? As mentioned before, many blogs have added a nofollow attribute to comments on their blog. This has been an unfortunate necessity due to the massive amounts of spam comments that have over-run the internet. However, there are many blogs that have removed this now-default setting so as to encourage dialogue and reward legitimate commenters. I have done this to my own blog and have been happy with the results. Do spammers attempt to comment on my blog? Absolutely. Do they succeed? Absolutely not. Probably 90+% of the comment attempts on my blog are spam. Almost all get blacklisted, never to have the privilege opened to them again. With respect to the nofollow/dofollow debate, of course dofollow is better because your site receives search engine trust and reputation but do not avoid commenting on blogs that have the nofollow attribute applied. A nofollow link is far better than no link.

Avoid Software And Outsourcing At All Costs. Many of the comment attempts on my blog have been made using automated software. The bottom line with respect to commenting software is this. It is nothing more than an arms race between those who use it and search engines. There is a race between the software that spams unprotected blogs and the de-indexing of these blogs by search engines as well as blog owners who have given up and thrown in the towel by turning off commenting or deleting the blog entirely. At the same time, comments placed by software are almost never related to the subject, even when commenting by keyword. They stick out like a sore thumb and are a great way to get blacklisted as well as ruin your site’s reputation on several fronts. Much of the same can be said about outsourcing comments. Remember this. No piece of software or hired commenter can or will give comments linking to your business, website or blog the care and consideration that is required by this SEO and networking tool. You can use a hammer to hit the nail on the head or break a windshield. The choice is up to you.

Bonus Tips On Finding Blogs To Comment On. You can use Google to find related blogs. Below are few examples:

“Add comment” Your Keywords”Post comment” Your Keywords”Write comment” Your KeywordsYour Keywords “leave a comment” / “leave comment”Your Keywords “Notify me of follow-up comments?”+”Submit the word you see below:”Your Keywords “Remember my personal information” + “Notify me of follow-up comments?”Your Keywords “Notify me of follow-up comments”Your Keywords “This site uses KeywordLuv”Your Keywords “Enable CommentLuv”Your Keywords “You can use these tags”Your Keywords “Powered by BlogEngine.NET”Your Keywords “Allowed HTML tags:”Your Keywords “top commenter”

Blog commenting can be a great way to drive traffic if it is done correctly. The benefits of networking and building your reputation conceal great rewards that are discovered only if you play by the rules.
