While some have tried to figure out or manipulate Google’s search algorithm, others have referenced Google itself and have used the many tools available to optimize and enhance their sites. Free tools such as Google Analytics or Webmaster Tools are invaluable and should not be looked down on because they are F-R-to the double E.

People think they have SEO figured out because they took a one hour webinar or read an article about how to become an SEO guru. I’m sorry friends, but you just don’t have it. There is more to it than listening to a guru. Do your research, practice, live and breathe SEO. But always refer back to the search engine itself. Google tells us what it is looking for and what it frowns upon. Don’t waste your time trying to pull one over on Google because it is just too smart for that. Tricking Google is a no no and it’s time you’ve learned a lesson.

Here are some of the quality guidelines and things that you should not do that Google has specifically outlined for you to improve your sites’ ranking on its search engine. The first basic principle that has been said over and over is to make your site for your users and not the search engines. “Cloaking” or presenting information to your users that is different from what the search engines see is frowned upon. If your users can interpret and easily navigate your pages, so will the search engines. Keep in mind that you will need to fully optimize title tags and meta descriptions as well as other basic search engine optimization “onpage” elements for the search engines to see.

The second basic principle is to not trick Google. Trust me, it is a matter of time before you will get caught and you will pay for your trickery. Some tricks that people actually think help them are: creating domains with duplicate content, using hidden or invisible text, using hidden links, and/or throwing up a bunch of keywords that have no relevancy to your site. These tricks won’t cut it.

This should go without saying, but too many people just don’t want to listen…do not participate in link schemes! Link exchange programs or link farming is not respected by Google and it is not what it wants to see. Links should be built naturally and you shouldn’t have to build or obtain links by doing something sneaky. If you are participating in a link scheme you will likely be linking to bad neighborhoods that will hurt your position on the SERPs. If you have good content on your site and/or blog posts, people will link to you. The links will come!

Finally, do not fall for the myth that SEO is a one-time thing. Making “onpage” changes or modifications should only happen once. However, the ongoing blogging and social media optimization is what is of most importance in the long run.

In my last article, I talked about how getting high quality links from authoritative websites in your field can boost your search engine rankings. This time, we’re going to explore further into linking strategies, and how to determine and obtain “high quality” links. We’re also going to talk briefly about Google’s PageRank.

First, let’s examine a regular link. It’s a piece of text (or image, but we’re going for text) that links to your blog, and some of the factors that matter are

1)     The address which it links to

2)     The text of the link

3)     The PageRank of the page on which the link resides

Let’s analyze this information one by one. First, you’d naturally want the link to link to your blog, but to which page of your blog? To an individual post or to your blog’s home page? Since your blog is a constantly updated website, it is always wise to accumulate all the links to point to your main page instead if individual posts because they tend to be very time-sensitive.

The text of the link also affects your rankings for a certain keyword. Let’s say your blog is about technological gadgets and another site has a link that says “Barbie dolls” and links to your blog. Doesn’t make much sense, right? If a lot of links that link to your site contain the terms “technological” or “gadget”, it will greatly boost your rankings for those keywords. 7. Hyperlink keywords in the content using them as anchor text link. Wikipedia style linking structure is best.

8. Recent trends show that Google dislikes menu bar links especially in the sidebar section and also the footer links. Rather it prefers drop down menu bar links at the top of the page just above the content. Therefore it’s advisable to create the linking structure accordingly.

There is a lot of confusion as to how a website gets to be #1 in Google. Although Google often changes their algorithm, one thing remains consistent; the inclusion of backlinks. You may ask, what is a backlink? That is a fair question; simply a backlink is a hyperlink from somewhere that points to your website. The more appropriate question should be; is there anything I need to know about backlinks? This answer is much more complex.

There are several things to take into consideration when building a backlink. This first thing is the anchor text. The anchor text is a piece of HTML code that is normally blue and underlined. These anchor text help Google to determine the keywords that should be used for your site. Depending on the type of website you are commenting on; you will need to use either “a href” or a “URL=”. Both methods are well documented on the Internet. The second thing to consider when building a backlink is if the backlink will appear on a homepage or an internal page. Homepage backlinks are more valuable than internal pages. The third consideration is the authority of the website you are commenting on. This is called Page Rank (PR). The best way to view PR is to use Firefox in coordination with SEO Quake. Google uses a ranking of between n/a (the lowest) to 0 through 10 (the highest). Getting a backlink on a PR 9 site is more valuable than getting a backlink on a PR n/a site. It is also harder to get a backlink on a PR 9 site than a n/a site.

1. Comment on Blogs - Find a blog that is about something you are passionate about and become a member. And, while a member; do more than just read the articles. Comment on them, become an active member by thinking about the article and submitting appropriate comments. If there are questions that are unanswered that you can solve, comment. 2. Submit Articles - Write articles on subjects that you are familiar with. Search the Internet for article directories and have your work distributed. (ezine is a great site to use) Most article directories allow you to include hyperlinks. These hyperlinks should of course include backlinks you your site.
3. Incorporate Social Media - Social Media sites like Facebook and Twitter are scanned often by Google. So, consider including hyperlinks in your posts on occasion. One word of advice; don’t just throw out spam. Your friends will not appreciate it.
4. Buy Backlinks - There are a tremendous amount of individuals out there that are willing to sell their service. Many are of great value. But, there are also many scammers. Be aware and do your research. I can tell you from experience that buying backlinks is a successful strategy for most people involved in Internet Marketing.
5. Trade Backlinks - While trading backlinks has fallen out of favor by most. I believe it still to be a tool to use as long as there isn’t a direct page for page linkage. The best way to implement this is to find a webmaster with more than one domain.
6. Build a domain farm - I like this technique. The key is to find domains that are of value. A couple of things determine value: Age and Backlinks. Expect to pay some good money if you find a site that has both. Backlinks forum, Warrior Forum and other sites will help you find domains for sale.
7. Join a Specialty Group - I am a developer. So, I belong to about a dozen coding websites. And, I am considered an expert on more than one. So, the webmaster really trusts my input. One of my requirements for helping junior developers is the inclusion of backlinks to my sites.
8. Build a Profile - Find some forums in which to become a member. Most forum sites allow you to build a signature. And, most signature fields allow backlink code.
